Figure Skating here in the Philippines experienced a boom when Michael Christian Martinez became the first Filipino to qualify into the Figure Skating event of the Winter Olympics in 2014.
Here in the Philippines, Figure Skating is governed by the Philippine Skating Union (which also governs speed skating) and the PHSU is currently headed by retired Filipino figure skater Nikki Cheng. The current national team for FS are as follows:
Senior Men's: Michael Christian Martinez, Edrian Celestino
Senior Women's: Sofia Lexi Frank
Senior Pairs: Isabella Gamez/Alexander Korovin
Every year, the PHSU holds the Philippine National Figure Skating Championships to determine which figure skaters would join the national team. Apart from being a means of selection for national team members, the PNFSC also serves as a competition for skaters of varying levels to compete in. There is even an invitational category where Filipinos can go against foreign skaters.
